Little Free Library Project Underway
The Kiwanis Club of Richmond's Satellite members have been on the move to help children and adults have access to books where access is difficult otherwise. Thanks to our Kiwanis family and our Foundation, one Little Free Library has already been installed and actively used in front of the McKinney Vento office on W. Leigh Street. Three more libraries have been purchased and are ready to install, decorate and fill with books!
Leigh Street (where both McKinney Vento and G.W. Carver Elementary School are located), does not have a public library anywhere close and children are eager to have their own books, read and learn. So, the goal is to supply the two children's libraries for a year with new and gently used books. Our goal is to purchase 2,000 new books for the children in these communities. The average cost of a book is $5.
We are asking for your help and help from your neighbors and friends. Please make a tax deductible donation to the Richmond Kiwanis Foundation designating Little Free Library. It's easy to do it online or, if you wish, by mailing a check to Richmond Kiwanis Foundation, P.O. Box 17825, Richmond, VA 23226. Make sure you designate Little Free Library on the check.
Also, we are collecting gently used, content appropriate children's books. Jana Rairden and Robin McCallister will be collecting books at our Monday meetings at the Virginia Museum of History and Culture, but if it's easier, please drop them off at the Kiwanis Office at Seventh Street Christian Church on Grove Avenue or email Jana or Robin for a pickup. Each book will be reviewed for content and then stamped "Richmond Kiwanis donation, to be shared, not sold" before going to the libraries.
The drive is now through August, before school begins. Thank you for helping increase literacy in our Richmond communities! Share this on your social media links and email to friends and family! We can do this!
