Why Carver Needs Us
George Washington Carver Elementary School is a Title I school serving 410 students in downtown Richmond, most of whom live in public housing at Gilpin Court. More than 92% of students are economically disadvantaged, nearly 10% have disabilities, and the school’s early‑grade learners often begin kindergarten significantly behind their peers.
During the 2022–2023 school year, Carver evaluated 65 incoming kindergarteners. Only seven arrived with basic knowledge of colors, letters, and numbers—skills essential for early reading success. Without intervention, these gaps compound quickly, making literacy one of the most urgent needs at Carver.
Our Goal
The Carver Literacy Project aims to ensure every student at Carver Elementary reads proficiently by third grade—a critical milestone where children shift from learning to read to reading to learn. Reaching this benchmark dramatically improves long‑term academic outcomes.
What the Project Does
To close early literacy gaps, the Kiwanis Club of Richmond funds a certified reading specialist who provides intensive small‑group and one‑on‑one instruction for kindergarten through second grade students who are not yet reading on grade level.
Focused Instruction
2.5 hours per week of targeted literacy support
25–30 students served annually
Individualized lessons in phonics, fluency, comprehension, and foundational skills
Proven Results
In the program’s first year, students showed measurable improvement. High‑risk readers dropped significantly, more students moved into the medium‑risk band, and eight students reached grade‑level reading proficiency. These gains demonstrate that consistent, focused literacy intervention works—and changes a child’s academic trajectory.

Even with one reading specialist, many Carver students still need individualized support. Kiwanis’ long‑term vision has always been to provide two reading specialists so the school can reach every child who needs help.
