Rev. John Edward Miller, Ph.D., Rector Emeritus St. Mary's Episcopal Church

The Reverend John Edward Miller, Ph.D., is a native of Richmond, Virginia. He was raised and educated in the Henrico County Schools, graduating from Douglas S. Freeman High School, were he was a member of the Key Club, National Honor Society, and Latin club, and was sports editor of the DSF newspaper. He next entered Washington & Lee University, Lexington, Virginia, completing a B.A. in economics and European history, serving as president of his social fraternity, Phi Kappa Sigma, writing for the college newspaper, and playing lacrosse. On the day after graduation from W&L he married his high school sweetheart, Mary Marguerite Hays. Feeling drawn to teach religious studies, he attended Union Theological Seminary, Richmond, where he earned master’s degrees in divinity and theology, and a Ph.D. in philosophical theology. His son, John, Jr., was born in 1972, and Marguerite began a career in music and counseling at St. Catherine’s School that would last until her death from breast cancer in 1998. Her legacy at St. Catherine’s continues to benefit girls. Dr. Miller’s professional career included adjunct teaching of religious studies at the University of Richmond from 1974-90. During that time, he was also called to pastoral ministry, beginning at River Road Church, Baptist, in Richmond, and then shifting to St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, Goochland, in 1977. His St. Mary’s experience led to ordination to the Episcopal priesthood in 1982, serving as Assistant Rector until 1984, when the parish called him to be their Rector. Dr. Miller enjoyed a 38-year ministry at St. Mary’s, collaborating with a vibrant congregation to encourage growth in membership, outreach, education, spiritual formation, and physical additions to the campus. He has served on the boards of St. Christopher’s School, Westminster Canterbury, Elk Hill Farm, and St. Mary’s Episcopal School, as well as chairing numerous committees for the Episcopal Diocese of Virginia. His tenure as St. Mary’s Rector ended with his retirement in 2016, and he was subsequently named Rector Emeritus by the parish Vestry. In 2012 he married Deborah Barr Halloran, and his family grew to include her children and grandchildren, along with his son and daughter-in-law, who reside in Brooklyn, New York. John and Deborah, together with Lex, their Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, are looking forward to the time after COVID-19, when they can all gather around the family table again.
