On Friday, September 17, there will be a field trip for Kiwanians and friends to the Robert Russa Moton Museum in Farmville (Prince Edward County), Virginia. The Museum documents the political and moral struggle for educational equality: from the initial 1951 student walkout by African-American students protesting substandard segregated facilities to the 1954 Supreme Court decision (Brown v. Board of Education) striking down state-sponsored segregation in public education to Virginia’s response of “Massive Resistance” that closed Prince Edward County’s public schools for five years.
The field trip will include a private museum tour, followed by a fellowship lunch and conversation with an African-American lawyer who was a student when the public schools closed. Admission to the museum is free; field trip participants are responsible for the cost of lunch and transportation. There is a limit of 30, so sign up as soon as possible. If you need further information, contact Bob Rogers (804-363-5864).
