Gov. Youngkin Visits Carver ES
Kudos to the entire Carver Elementary School community! On Thursday, January 19, Governor and First Lady Youngkin and Superintendent of Public Instruction Jillian Balow received a warm welcome on their visit to the school where they read in a classroom and toured the Kiwanis Literacy Lab. They were greeted by administrators, faculty, volunteers, and school board member Mariah White, and of course, and Kiwanians John Mahone, Robin McCallister, Bob Rogers, and Bruce Tyler. The Governor was there to emphasize his strong support for the recently passed Virginia Literacy Act which will commence in the 2024-2025 school year.
In Alexis Evans’ class, the Governor and First Lady read to an engaged, responsive audience of firstgraders. Their post-reading question and answer period with the Governor was absolutely delightful! In the Learning Lab, assistant principal Cantrise Mayfield and literacy coach Sherry Paulchell, briefed the Governor on the school’s approach to teaching literacy competence. They also spoke with great appreciation of the school’s partnership with the Kiwanis Club of Richmond, our grant for the lab’s renovation, and our reading regularly in Carver classrooms.
Principal Tiawana Giles, currently on FMLA, would have been proud of the team of her faculty, staff, and volunteers. Her leadership in elevating learning expectations at Carver and setting the tone was clearly evident at the school.
