Teddy Gottwald: The Restoration of Tredegar Ironworks

Thomas E. (Teddy) Gottwald is the Chairman of NewMarket Corporation.  He also serves as CEO, a position he has held since 2004. He will be sharing a presentation on the restoration of Tredegar Ironworks (home of the American Civil War Museum) on January 25. He will discuss the development of the Tredegar historic riverfront area, how it’s evolved, and where it stands today. Included in this will be the restoration of the Gun Foundry, how it was saved, and how its use has evolved over time.

Teddy joined the Company in 1984 and held numerous positions in the company’s petroleum additives and former plastics businesses.  He proudly represents the third generation of his family to lead NewMarket, a relationship that dates back to 1918.

 A native of Richmond, Teddy received a BS degree in Chemistry from Virginia Military Institute (’83) and an MBA from the Harvard Business School (’87). He served in the 1980’s in the U.S. Army Reserve. Active in the community, he has served on a number of nonprofit boards, focusing his time on children’s education and health, and science. He currently serves on the boards of VMI Jackson-Hope Fund, Venture Richmond, and the VCU Engineering School Foundation. In addition, he has served on the NewMarket Corp board since 1994 and is a member of the Management Roundtable (Richmond). 

Teddy is a member of St. James’s Episcopal Church. He celebrated his 35th wedding anniversary in 2019, is the proud father of five Eagle Scouts, and has six grandchildren at last count.
