Building a Book Oasis In a Literacy Desert
What is the Richmond Kiwanis Little Free Library Project?
The primary focus of this ongoing Kiwanis Club project is to bring literacy opportunities to children by providing books with diverse characters, rich language, and stories that reflect the population of the communities we serve. We use the nationally known Little Free Libraries as our stepping stone to prepare for the long-term stewardship of literacy in the community that is underserved and with few financial, travel, and library resources available. Our Club sustains this project through annual fundraising, book collections, volunteering by Club members, and engaging the community. Additional libraries are to be installed in the future with local partners. The Carver community has embraced these libraries with such enthusiasm! Let’s get books into the hands of our city’s most vulnerable kids!
The impact of your giving to the Little Free Library project:
Builds community;
Gives children the opportunity to discover a personally relevant book to read that is not limited by time, space or privilege;
Fills book deserts; and
Provides more equitable book access.
